Kwazulu-Natal - South Coast and Inland West

Note: click the town links to see thumbnails of a image google search. Many of the pics are small as the internet in SA is pretty crappy except if you are in the big cities.

Click any pic with a hand for slide show.

This is a popular destination and accommodation is relatively cheap here. Most apartments are self catering and there are many fine restaurants. The beach is tame and boast good surf. It is very close to Durban and the freeway only about 3 miles from the beach if that. Locally not much to see except enjoy the beach and the surf. There are always sizeable waves here and shallow beaches means good breakers. It is much the same all along this coast line.

From here on for awhile, there are many coastal towns more geared up to vacation homes and time share

This used to be a great caravanner's paradise. My 1st visit here was with my folks in the early 70's. It has one of the nicest beaches in the area and is a great place for young parents. There is a miniature train for the kids and many leisure activities. This is where you come to sunbathe in peace and soak up the rays.

Behind all these towns are the sugar and banana plantations

PS is home to this narrow gauge steam loco which was used in the early days of the sugar can plantations. It is now a pure tourist attraction and takes you through the plantations and you get a pit stop at a station with a very colonial station where tea and scones are served. Great experience for the kiddies and adults alike. IIRC it is run by the Round Table.

Great beach and surf.

A neat little cove and this is where we have our version of spring break. Students come here and there are beach parties every day, surfing competitions and generally a good time had by all. If you are young, this is the place to get laid, come err.. go to. Sadly I only discovered this place after I was married - oh well I was probably too old already but the eye candy pleasant.

Very popular with the locals but other than the beach and water slides, not much else to do here

Ramsgate
Not much to see here, just a quieter beach.

This used to be the last of the coastal towns before entering the old Transkei Xhosa homeland. Back in the day, gambling was verboten and just across the bridge is the Wild Coast Sun and all the gambling you want plus blue movies. I spent my honeymoon here and believe it or not, the place I saw my first blue movie. Did not see that one coming and new wife and I just sat there taking it all in. You can read into that whatever you wish. here the Beaches become topless as that too was verboten in the old SA.

From here on it becomes the wild coast and getting around the country side is relegated to 4x4 RCV's.

We'll cover that under the Eastern Cape Province.

All of the old homelands (Bantustans) under the apartheid era had casinos and for them their primary income source and was the reason we have Sun City in North West Province (formally Bophuthaswana) and part of the PGA tour.

Sun City was developed by the hotel magnate Sol Kerzner as part of his Sun International group of properties. It was officially opened on 7 December 1979; at the time it was located in the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana. (wiki)

We now go back inland and visit Kokstad and Underberg.

Kokstad

The town is just a farming town so nothing of note other than it is home to SA's maximum security prison. My BIL lives here and this is his home in the hills 5km outside the town.

Underberg
Much the same, a farming town. From my last road trip.

Leaving Underberg.

What is of note here is the Brit influence. The fields are all cordoned off with tree lines just like the English countryside. You really do not see tree lines like this pic other than in this region of Underberg. These pics were in early spring so not really that green yet. This area also gets snow.

Obviously I have just followed the towns shown on the map. There are many more and many awesome pics of scenery.

When I eventually get round to my next road trip, I intend to research the legends of the towns and the stories folk would tell in a pub. There is a rich history to be learned and you need time to get it all.

Other than the north coastal region, I have actually been to all the places I have posted about here.

The next province to be tackled is the Eastern Cape, my second favourite region.
